ARTIST BLOCK

Another sketch book day. I seem to be able to sit down and sketch but I try to pick up a brush and I can not paint..I can not even do background work.. What is wrong?? I can not even hold a brush in my hand with out saying bad words..Like _______________.....LOL......
You can fill in the blank...
It is a week away from Christmas and I am never ready. So my family decided that everyone is coming to my house.. First I do not cook, second I do not cook, and third I do not cook. So what am I doing for Christmas I AM COOKING!!!!! They want a traditional holiday meal.. I tried to explain to them tradition for me is going to other people's home... Where they cook and I bring something from the Bakery....So I suppose I will pick up a larger bottle of wine for dinner...
Yes, I love my family, sure I do...We all love our family at Christmas they bring you gifts.. LOL>
Have a good week and may you always dream in color.

Poor you, that happens a lot to me too, people landing on me for Christmas. One year I decided to have a buffet instead. Paul cooked u roasts before s there was cold meats for those that eat it. I prepared a huge salad (I like to throw everything into a salad pot, it really is a meal in itself - no lettuce, plenty of spinach and rocket) we got all the trimmings and fancy jars. In reality it was a lot more hard work and more expensive tan doing a traditional lunch but everyone enjoyed it. Your guests have probably been to a dozen Christmas meals already, do what you feel comfortable with. Its your Christmas too.

Your sketch is cool, go with your new direction. Good sketches can be the bones of a great painting. When your paint flows freely once more you will have plenty to wor with x

Katelen.... you cannot paint because you're stressed! I'd be stressed out to with that scenario. Can they each bring a dish? Do you have a Whole Foods where you live? They can be very helpful!! : )

I agree, it is stress... just go to the market and have them make it all and bring it home, easy... expensive yes, but easy, or at least have them make most of it. and then go art it up! xo

Well crap I say!!! Really it's s... I say!!!!!
Could you pick up an Honey Baked Ham (I know they are expensive) and tell everyone to bring a dish. You should not have to do all the work for goodness sake!!!! And ready to bake pies are tasty!!! The extra bottle of wine is a good idea too!! :)

Keep sketching Katelen, the painting will come back. This one is interesting. Was the background planned?? Are you stuck in the blocks??? But I also see a not so friendly maybe painful barbed wire fence?? Is there something preventing you from escaping from those blocks??? Just an observation.

Love you!

Katelen I bet whatever you make will taste delicious just because you are all gathered together.

Well no wonder you feel creatively blocked...you are essentially forced to fulfill a fantasy for other people...I dare say many old memories/anxieties from family stuff in the past is arising and taking hold of your ability to create your own artistic fantasies...the fact that you are able to draw and express your feelings in this manner is proof positive that painting will return to you soon as well. Just breathe and allow this moment, that mark on the paper, this opportunity to express yourself in a new medium (cooking) flow. Maybe instead of focusing on the act of cooking...consider the art...the colors and textures...if it doesn't taste good, so what? At least as an artist you can make it look good!

um...happy holidays?
gentle steps,
laura

It sounds like a stressful time of the year for lots of people, so don't feel so bad about the painting block, I'm there right now, lol! and some people gave me great advice about it. Keep sketching, and creating whatever way you feel like until your muse returns. Blocks don't last that long, you may just need a break.

Now for the cooking, I like the idea of picking up a fully cooked ham, since all you need to do it heat it up, then you make some easy side dishes, and watch your guests admire your skills :-D
With a good recipe, you will have no problems! good luck

Well, enjoy the holiday and your sketches, you never know, when you can create the best design in your lifetime. Cooking, cooking is not for me, but I enjoy the family reunion and everyone will bring a plate.

Painting and I have been in a bad relationship for some time now...it frustrates me to even think about it. It's odd really coz I can paint and when it goes well I love to paint. Just mixing, blending, merging colours and transforming a whole surface with layers of paint...

On the other hand, I do like to cook:)

Manon is right, you can't paint because of stress. Honey Baked is a great idea-I did that one year and had people bring one dish, I used pretty paper plates, etc and there was almost no clean-up. I'm sending you good energy and calm-ness.
Hope you can relax and have a good time. Do keep sketching though your work is very nice (good therapy too!)

I really love this portrait .... very powerful. Sometimes I don't feel like painting. In fact, I have been mostly drawing for the last two weeks. It is part of the process for me. Drawing comes first, then painting. When I get excited about a drawing then I feel like painting. So don't stress over not wanting to paint. Drawing is where you are now and embrace that for all it has to offer you.

Warm wishes for the Holiday and the New Year.

it is pretty hard to be creative and produce much art when our minds are occupied with shopping, cooking, baking, cleaning,wrapping- I give up the month of Dec. to all that-- so a block or two in the studio is okay.
